I’m hooked on Facebook

Social networking is a must have in today’s fast pace news world. Not only do social networks such as Facebook and Twitter report what is going on in your life, but they also report news about any topic by using fan pages. Social networking sites provide valuable public relations to companies or musicians.

Facebook gives the user options to set up fan pages and personal pages. The personal page can include as much or as little information about yourself as you want. The fan page, or “like” pages, is a website where multiple people can join and support the cause of the page. For example my personal page includes information like my birthday and a default picture of myself, but I can create a “like” page if I want to promote my company. Say I am the Public Relations Specialist for a music record label, Laura’s Label. I could create a page on Facebook about Laura’s Label recording company. The page could include when the company is founded, where the company is located and new events that the company is hosting.

Aside from the “like” page, you can also create an event. Events on Facebook can compare to an online invitation to a party or event. The event allows you, the creator, to share information about the event and invite people on Facebook.

There are a few guidelines to keep in mind if you want to promote on these social networks:

1. Facebook personal pages only allow up to 5,00 friends. Having a separate page dedicated to your company or musician group is very important. “Like” pages, fan pages, have no fan limit.
2. You need to have a Facebook profile in order to have a fan page. The personal profile is the admin to the fan page.
3. Do not stress out if Facebook gets overwhelming. If you need help finding something on Facebook or making an event page just Google your question. There are plenty of helpful websites that you can use to help you with Facebook.
